I just received this directly from Apogee.
Holding it feels a bit like you’re doing the weather on telly, too, which is fun. So, well built and easy to use: so far, two ticks. With Apogee having spent the last 30 years producing equipment for professional musicians, it seems only fair we expect the Groove’s sound to be high quality too. After all, this is a headphone amp and DAC marketed at those aiming to use it for home recording and production. Beginning with Morrissey’s, the smoothness of the sound is immediately apparent. The piano and nylon-stringed guitar intro has a music box feel, almost lullaby-like, which is gentle but confident. Propped up by that, the vocal is able to glide atop with enough space in the mix for the reverb in which it is drenched not to be hemmed in.

Its as if the attack of the cymbals makes the part of the sound that comes after the attack briefly smear itself with the rest of the music. With the Groove, the sounds stay where they are - never blending with the other instruments - even for a moment. My onboard audio (Skull Candy approved - damn you guys how dare you put your name on something that sounds so awful) smears and blends audio almost all the time.
I can't get enough! I did briefly try some of my other cans and IEMs - the Groove made them all sound better than I remember, but none of them sound as good to me as with the M70x. The volume on my computer is currently set to 4% - or 4 out of 100 - and it is loud enough.
More advanced users should probably check out some of the more expensive DACs but for those looking for a solid little gadget that brings your music to life with a much more defined sound for cheap, then you’ve pretty much found the best solution. Specifications list: • Standard Micro USB port for power • 200 mW output • 24-bit/96 kHz rate • ≥108 dB ratio • 1x Coaxial digital output and stereo PCM format • 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency report Best DAC Amp Combo 2. AudioQuest is one of the first to gain recognition in the premium cable industry and after this success, they’ve decided to try their hand at signal sources. As such, the Dragonfly USB headphone amplifier/DAC was born and now the third generation – the Black – is continuing the dynasty of products that strive for pleasing music lovers everywhere with those particular details that are capable of striking a real audible difference. The Dragonfly Black is more portable than its predecessors in terms of compatibility rather than dimensions which stayed the same. Because of the new Microchip micro controller which draws considerably less power than the previous version, this makes it more fitting to be used with iOS or Android devices.
Unfortunately I have not heard Dragonfly, so it's impossible for me to say how Dragonfly compares to Groove. Dragonfly otherwise lacks the physical volume control that Groove has. Groove with Parrot Zik Ok - now that we have mapped the physical capabilities and limitations, is the time to listen to Apogee Groove. Among my two headsets there are only one that is suitable to use with Groove. Stax headphone which is the set I primarily used for stationary HiFi - listening, can only be used together with Stax`s associated transformer with volume control, and therefore excludes a sensible use with Groove.
